StudioLive 16.0.2 - Can I Stream/Broadcast using the 16.0.2?

Reviewed March 23, 2023

First, it's important to note a main functional difference between Recording software (DAWs) and Live-Streaming software:

Most Streaming software will only accept two (2) USB channels at a time for their Input to the feed or Live-Stream. For most devices, this would be input channels 1/2 by default.

Windows Users can assign the StudioLive 16.0.2 input channels 1/2 or Main L/R for streaming input once updated to Universal Control 4.0.0.

Universal Control can be found here: UC Surface | Downloads | PreSonus

Mac Users with streaming software may only assign input from Channels 1/2 with Mac-core audio.

By default, USB 1/2 are set to receive their audio from Inputs 1 and 2 of the StudioLive.

Unlike the Series III and AI/RM generations of StudioLive mixers,

The StudioLive 16.0.2 does not feature a built-in menu for soft-patching USB Sends/Returns to other channels.

For the 16.0.2, these are fixed to have 1-to-1 input/output over USB with USB Channels 17/18 as the dedicated channels for the Main L/R mix.

(Please note: Aux Outputs are not digitally routable over USB for the StudioLive 16.0.2)

There are a few methods for Streaming Output-audio with the StudioLive 16.0.2 USB:

For Windows Users with Universal Control 4.0.0+.
Universal Control 4 brought some additional routing for the StudioLive 16.0.2 USB through WDM.
In your Broadcast software you would need to set "StudioLive Main L/R (StudioLive 16.0.2 USB)" as your audio input device.

3rd party Loopback software-

Loopback and aggregate software may allow for rerouting the USB channels for your StudioLive into USB 1/2 of your software. For example, routing the StudioLive USB 17/18 (Main L/R) to Input 1/2.

Using a dedicated 2-channel USB Audio Interface.

You can also physically connect the XLR or TRS Left/Right outputs into a 2-Channel USB Interface. Then, select the USB Interface as your Audio Device for your streaming software.

Since the Interface only has two channels, it would send the audio from your connected StudioLive output into the software on USB 1/2 via the Interface's Inputs 1 and 2.

Hard-patching back into the StudioLive's Input 1/2

Another method is to hard-patch/loop the physical outputs you wish to broadcast back into Channels 1/2 of the StudioLive 16.0.2. Since the Broadcast software will only see those 2 channels anyway, the software would receive audio from the connected Output channels.

NOTE: To avoid a feedback loop, it is strongly recommended that channels 1/2 be turned down or muted. Channels will still pass their input signal over USB into the streaming software.
