StudioLive AR Mixers- AFL/PFL buttons - Why can't I hear audio from my Phones and Control Room outputs?

Reviewed Feb 9, 2021

If your StudioLive AR mixer's Control Room and Phones outputs appear to not pass audio,

be sure that an AFL or PFL button is not inadvertently engaged on a channel that is not in use.

The PFL/AFL buttons act as [Solo] buttons for listening to specific input or output channels through the Control Room and Phones outputs of the StudioLive AR.

NOTE: AFL/PFL assignments do not affect the Main L/R XLR Outputs of the StudioLive. These only change what the Control Room and Phones outputs are monitoring.

If none of the AFL/PFL buttons are engaged, the Control Room and Phones outputs will monitor audio from the Main Output.

If a PFL or an AFL button is inadvertently engaged on a channel that does not have input/output (no signal or audio), then the Control Room and Phones outputs would be monitoring that channel with no audio- this would give the impression that these outputs are not passing audio or malfunctioning.

Disengage all active PFL/AFL buttons to be sure your StudioLive's outputs are passing audio from the Main mix.

NOTE: With the StudioLive ARc (USB-C) models, there is an indicator-light on the right side of the console to show if AFL/PFL is engaged (photo below).

PFL stands for Pre-Fader Listen and sends the audio signal of the engaged input channel to the Control Room and Phones outputs of the StudioLive AR. This signal is Pre-fader, meaning the placement of the fader for that channel (with PFL engaged) will not alter the signal sent to the mentioned outputs.

AFL stands for After-Fader Listen and sends the audio signal of the engaged output channel to the Control Room and Phones outputs of the StudioLive AR. This signal is After-fader (Post-fader), so the placement of the fader for the channel (with AFL engaged) will alter the signal sent to the mentioned outputs.
