StudioLive Series III - Why am I hearing Digital Feedback with recording/playback in Studio One?

Reviewed Feb 05, 2021

Before continuing you will need to be sure you are using the latest Universal Control and Firmware for your StudioLive:

If the channels are set to USB input on the StudioLive and are armed to record in StudioOne while simultaneously outputting to the same Channel being recorded, you may then encounter a harsh metallic sounding digital feedback.

This is caused by StudioOne recording the same channel it is playing audio back on- creating the infinite feedback loop.

When you open a template in Studio One for your mixer such as the "StudioLive 32 Session", under New Song>Interfaces, each channel will be routed one to one by default. This means that channel 1 in Studio One will output to channel 1 on your Series III mixer when the input source for Channel 1 is set to USB.

Unarming to record/turning off input-monitoring

One method is to unarm/disengage the channels for recording/input-monitoring when playing back audio over USB. This is done with the red record and blue speaker buttons on each channel.

Set the input for the channel on the StudioLive to "Analog" to arm and record.

To hear playback, unarm in Studio One and then set the channel to USB playback.

Arranging Stereo-playback instead of 1:1 playback

Another way you can avoid this is by summing your StudioOne channels to a common Stereo-Output. We recommend routing to the 2TrackInL/R channel in Studio One, then routing output from Studio One to the TAPE IN channel on your StudioLive.

Instructions can be found here:

Using Studio One as a 1:1 Digital Insert on each channel for recording/playback

If you want to maintain a one to one routing instead of using Stereo output, then best practice is to use StudioOne as an insert for the channel(s).

For example, choose Channel 1 on the StudioLive, then go to that channel's Settings, assign input type as "USB" and assign "Digital Send Source" to Analog as illustrated below.

This will use Studio One as an insert on the StudioLive's channel.

The audio path would be:

Microphone> StudioLive input Gain/FAT Channel> Studio One> StudioLive Input channel fader (set to USB input with Analog Digital Send source).
