ATOM SQ: How to use ATOM SQ’s sequencer feature in Studio One 5

ATOM SQ can be used as either a rhythmic or melodic sequencer within Studio One 5. The sequencer allows you to select a sample or note on the top row and place it in the sequence to be played in the bottom row. To create a sequence:

    • Ensure that ATOM SQ is connected as an external device in Studio One 5 with the ATM SQ ports set as Send To and Receive From
    • Create a new song if a song is not open already.
    • Press the Inst button on ATOM SQ
    • Press Instruments Browser until the Browser window shows up
    • Use the Main Encoder to the right of the screen to select an instrument
      • You can use the Close Folder and Open Folder buttons to navigate through the browser.
      • This can be either a PreSonus instrument or a third party one. Keyboard or Drum too
    • Press Load Selected
    • The instrument is now created as a new track on the timeline
    • Press the Page Right button underneath the encoder knob
    • Press Add Pattern
      • Patterns and Parts are different in Studio One. Parts are ways to arbitrarily add MIDI events on the timeline. Patterns lock in triggers to a sequence which is meant to be looped with the ability to customize the length of the sequence.
    • Press Editor
    • The Pads on ATOM SQ should now be in sequencer mode.
      • If using a drum based instrument, such as Impact, the top lane should be multi colored. Each pad represents a different drum sample.
      • If using a melodic based instrument, such as Mai Tai or Mojito, the top lane will highlight the roots in light blue. The bottom lane will be a single color.
    • Press a pad on the top lane to select it
      • You now can place this sample/note into the sequence
    • Press a pad on the bottom row to place it in the sequence
      • Each pad represents a different step within the sequence. The default is 16 steps. 
      • Think of each step as a division of the meter. With a division of 16 steps in a 4/4 time signature, each step represents a 16th note
      • Example: Steps 1, 5, 9, and 13 are spaced out a quarter note apart. ATOM SQ has white lines on the hardware to mark these 4 divisions. These specific steps will follow the metronome in a 4/4 time signature.
      • Example: Steps 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 are spaced out an eighth note apart.
      • Example: Pressing all 16 pads will create 16th notes.
    • Press play
      • Watch as Pad’s LEDs light up in time as the sequence moves forward.
    • Adjust the loop length by pressing and holding the shift button and turning knob 7.
      • This will move the end of the loop section on the timeline. You can see it move at the top of Studio One as you turn.
      • It’s best to set the end of the loop at the end of the sequence you created for your virtual instrument.
    • Set the loop by pressing Shift + Play button.
      • This will turn the loop section on the timeline blue to show it is active.
    • Press the Stop button three times.
      • This will place your cursor at the beginning of the timeline
    • Press play
      • When the cursor reaches the end of the loop it will now play from the beginning.
      • This will allow you to experiment within your sequence indefinitely.
