Before proceeding please be sure your firmware is updated on your StudioLive and that you are using the latest Universal Control:
StudioLive AI console Firmware Update (via USB thumb drive)
StudioLive RM (RML) series Firmware Update (via USB thumb drive)
First, it's important to note a main functional difference between Recording software (DAWs) and Live-Streaming software:
Most Streaming Software will only accept two (2) channels for their Input to the feed or Live-Stream.
More specifically, Streaming software will only accept USB Send 1/2 or WDM 1/2 (Firewire) from the StudioLive or other USB/Firewire Interfaces, mixers, etc.
Usually Firewire/WDM routing are defaulted to be 1-to-1.
Meaning, usually WDM 1/2 are assigned to Input Channel 1 and 2 by default from the StudioLive AI/RM.
With Streaming, you will need to rearrange WDM 1 and WDM 2 to be the Output-pair of Channels to which you will be mixing the feed/live-stream.
This Stream mix can be separate from the Main L/R output using a pair of Aux mixes OR can be arranged to feed the Main L/R mix verbatim.
To Assign/choose your Main or Aux pair to WDM 1/2 for Streams/Broadcasting:
First, you will need to assign the Mix you have chosen for your Broadcast feed to a pair of Channels to be sent to the computer. This is done in Universal Control's "Aux Routing" section in the device setting for the StudioLive AI/RM (shown below).
The "Aux Routing" tab can be found by logging into the StudioLive AI/RM and then choosing the settings "Gear" icon in the top-right corner.
In the screenshot above,
We used a StudioLive 32.4.2 AI, and assigned our Aux Mix 1/2 to channels 33/34.
This will output our Aux Mix 1/2 from the StudioLive into the computer to be recorded on channels 33/34.
However, keeping in mind that Broadcast and Streaming software only sees WDM 1/2, we would still need to re-route channels 33/34 into Windows's WDM 1/2. By default, our example channels would be assigned to WDM 33/34.
Reminder: WDM channels are the channels of Windows 10 itself, and can be rearranged/rerouted, but are 1:1 by default.
To reroute WDM Channels for your Firewire StudioLive,
- Open Universal Control's main window.
- Choose "Settings"
- Then "Options"
- Then choose the "WDM Setup" tab.
Once in the WDM Setup Menu,
- Choose the "Inputs" option in the top-left corner.
- Drag WDM 1 and WDM 2 from the left side to "StudioLive AUX1" and "AUX2" (shown below)
- Choose "Apply" and "OK"
After assigning WDM 1/2 to the Aux output of your choice,
Your StudioLive should now input the Aux or L/R Mix (depending on what is setup) to your software.
Be sure to choose the StudioLive/FireStudio as your Audio Device.
Please note, "StudioLive AUX1" corresponds to channel 33 (Channel 17 for SL16.4.2 and Channel 25 for SL24.4.2 AI) of the "Aux Routing" tab in Universal Control.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
WDM assignments are how Windows interprets channels to and from the StudioLive- globally.
By rearranging WDM 1/2 to a Mix pair, when recording in a DAW (such as StudioOne) Tracks 1 and 2 are no longer receiving audio from Inputs 1/2 of the Console and instead would record/hear Aux1/2 as assigned in our example.
