StudioLive Series III: DAW Mode Setup Troubleshooting Guide

Updated 11/20/2020 (Firmware 2.4+)

This article outlines Troubleshooting methods and frequently asked questions for when DAW mode on a StudioLive Series III console will not connect to your DAW software through UCNET MIDI.

Before continuing you will need to be sure you are using the latest Universal Control and Firmware for your StudioLive:

PROTOOLS, LOGIC AND STUDIO ONE:

Be sure that you only open ProTools or Logic after connecting your StudioLive in DAW Mode (HUI/MCU).

WHITE DOT IN UNIVERSAL CONTROL  (Shows as “Not Connected”)

When you open Universal Control and look at the Network MIDI settings in the Preferences menu,

Does the mixer show as connected with a Green Dot or is it showing a White Dot indicating "not connected"?

If the StudioLive shows as "Not Connected" in Universal Control be sure to check the following variables:

Cabling

It is recommended that CAT5E or CAT6 Ethernet cables be used with Series III Products.

-More information on Ethernet cables can be found here:

What makes a good Ethernet cable for audio applications?

Has the Ethernet cable(s) connecting the StudioLive, computer, and/or router been tested or swapped for comparison testing?

Are you connected to the “Control” port and not the “Audio Network” port on the back of the StudioLive?

-Your Ethernet cable should be in the Control port for DAW Mode.

The other end of the Ethernet cable should go to your router's LAN port or directly connected to your computer from the Control port of your StudioLive.

-Be sure that your StudioLive’s Control port is not connected to the main Internet port of your router. Your Ethernet cable should be connected to one of the LAN ports on your router.

If your computer and StudioLive are powered ON when making new cable connections, a power-cycle (off/on) of the computer and StudioLive may be needed to reconnect the devices.

A guide on making the connections for DAW Mode can be found here in Section 2 of the DAW Control Addendum:

System Programs

Are all associated programs, software, operating system, etc. fully updated to their latest available versions?

Is your system Firewall on?

We recommend disabling the firewall or antivirus programs on your computer for troubleshooting purposes.

Also, often there can be another program conflicting with the IP assignment-

-Such as VPNs, AntiVirus programs, Malware programs, Waves SoundGrid (also uses UCNET).

We recommend uninstalling or deactivating these programs for the sake of troubleshooting.

IP Addressing

With USB disconnected, do you see your StudioLive in Universal Control as an available option?

If not, Universal Control and your StudioLive do not see each other correctly over your network

-Direct Connection (Computer <-> StudioLive)

Are you direct-connecting your StudioLive's “Control” port with your computer? (No router)

Is your StudioLive's IP Mode set to Static Self Assigned IP mode (Self Assn.) in UCNET on the console?

NOTE: The first 2 sets of IP numbers should match for your DAW and StudioLive.

(Ex: 169.254.xxx.xxx shown above.)

Is your WIFI Turned On?

[If you are connected through a direct connection, the wireless network may conflict with the wired network. Disable WIFI to ensure there are no conflicts. Once DAW Mode is engage, WIFI can be re-enabled]

      • If you disable the WIFI,
      • Power off your StudioLive and computer
      • Power on the StudioLive first (Be sure it is in Static "Self Assn" mode in UCNET)
      • Then power up your computer.
      • Does the StudioLive show a GreenDot in UC Network MIDI?

-Wireless Connection (Computer <<< Router <-> StudioLive)

Is your StudioLive connected directly to your router with the computer connected via WIFI?

If your computer is also connected to your router directly with a cable, disable your WIFI on your computer as you are direct-connected to the network.

Is your StudioLive's IP Mode set to Dynamic IP mode in UCNET on the console?

StudioLive Network and Control - When to use Dynamic vs. Static Self Assigned IP Mode

Have you checked to make sure the StudioLive is connected to a LAN port on your router and not the main Internet port?

NOTE: The first 2 sets of IP numbers should match for your DAW and StudioLive.

(Ex: 192.168.xxx.xxx shown above.)

-Verifying IP Addressing / Connection Ping

You can also "ping" your StudioLive to see if your computer and StudioLive see each other.

For Mac:

      • Open Applications/Utilities/Terminal
      • Type "ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX"
(fill in the X's with the IP address shown on the StudioLive in UCNET and remove the "quotes")
      • Press Return/Enter
      • Let the computer ping for about 10 seconds
      • Press "Control+C" to stop the ping
If the ping does not stop, be sure it is the "Control" key on your Mac keyboard and not the "Command" key.
      • Once stopped, what are your results?
0.0% Packet loss indicates that your StudioLive and computer see each other
100.0% packet loss means that the computer does not see the StudioLive connected and may be one of the above mentioned instances of an IP conflict, a blocked connection, or a faulty Ethernet cable.

For Windows:

      • Press [WindowsKey] + [R]
      • Type “cmd”
      • Click on Command Prompt
      • Type "ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX"
(fill in the X's with the IP address shown on the StudioLive in UCNET and remove the "quotes")
      • Press Enter
      • -Once stopped, what are your results?
0.0% Packet loss indicates that your StudioLive and computer see each other.
100.0% packet loss means that the computer does not see the StudioLive connected and may be one of the above mentioned instances of an IP conflict, a blocked connection, or a faulty Ethernet cable.

BLANK SCRIBBLE STRIPS ABOVE CHANNELS

If you are able to connect your StudioLive console to your DAW and engage DAW Mode successfully but your scribble strips are empty or blank, most often this is attributed to a program on your computer conflicting with UCNET. With this situation, the recommendation is the same as mentioned above- Check all cabling and system programs.

Is your system Firewall on?

We recommend disabling your firewall for troubleshooting.

Also, often times there can be another program conflicting with the IP assignment-

-Such as VPNs, AntiVirus programs, Malware programs, or other UCNET Programs,

We recommend uninstalling or deactivating these programs for the sake of troubleshooting.
