EarMix16M Firmware Update Guide

Published 12-03-18

What’s Needed:

  • EarMix16M
  • A computer** (Mac or PC) with the lastest Universal Control software (v2.8 or higher)
  • Firmware update file (provided inside your product registration on my.presonus.com)
  • Standard Ethernet (Cat5e/6 cable) and a router (optional).

**Note: If you’re computer does not have an ethernet port (newer MacBooks, etc), then you will need a compatible USB / Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter for your system.

Connecting the Earmix16 to your computer:

Connecting with a Router:

Simply connect both the EarMix16M and the computer to the router using Ethernet cables. If you are using WiFi on the laptop, then it is possible to only connect the EarMix16M using Ethernet, then use WiFi on the Laptop to connect to the Router.***

In most cases, it may be easier to hard-wire both the computer and EarMix to the router directly.

Direct Connection:

For a direct connection using Static Self-Assigned IP’s, simply connect the EarMix16M to your computer using a standard Ethernet (Cat5e/6) cable. Both the EarMix16M and your computer should assign itself an IP in the same Subnet and Range automatically.

To ensure IP's are in range, see next section. Otherwise, skip further down for update instructions.

Verifying your computer's IP Address

macOS / OSX

For macOS users, navigate to your Network Preferences utility.

You should see a list of available network adapters on the left side of the utility. Once you have connected the Ethernet cable between the computer and switch, macOS should eventually establish a Self Assigned IP Address. This is because no DHCP (ie, Router) is available to assign an IP for it. The adapter will have an Orange or Yellow color dot indicating this status.

Windows PCs

For Windows users, use the following steps to verify your IP address.

  1. Press [Windows Key] + [R]
  2. Type ‘cmd’ in the text box and press Enter
  3. In the Terminal window, type ‘ipconfig -all’
  4. You will then see a list of information for your Network Adapters. Locate the IPv4 IP address line for the Network Adapter you are using to connect with.
  5. When making a direct Ethernet connection, your adapter should self-assign with an IP of [ 169.254.*.* ]

Note: The asterisk is numbers that the adapter will set. Just make sure the first two sets of numbers match.

Updating the Firmware via UC:

Once everything is wired up and powered on, the UC Launch Panel will display the connected unit(s) inside the UC launch panel.

To update, simply click on the device icon you wish to update. At the top of the UC Panel, you will see the unit’s Name, Serial Number, Current Firmware Version, and a button that says ‘Update Firmware.’

When you click this button, UC will ask you to find the firmware file you downloaded. Make sure this file has been extracted from the compressed file that is downloaded from your my.presonus.com account, otherwise UC will not accept the file.

Once the file is accepted, the update process will start automatically. Usually takes about 1-2 minutes. After completing, the unit will restart itself.

You can verify the update was successful by waiting for UC to display the unit again, then click on the unit to see current firmware version.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: If the firmware does not ‘update,’ apply the process again. In some very rare cases, the units won’t update on first try. Shouldn’t be an issue, but just in case!
